Sports Massage

As well as our personal training and group classes we run a sports massage therapy clinic on Saturdays. This is open to all in need of injury treatment, corrective therapy or performance enhancement. The clinic typically runs from 12pm until 4pm dependant on bookings and how busy we are in the gym. The clinic takes place at Pro Physiotherapy, who are based at Smith's Yard - two doors down from us. If you're in need of physiotherapy treatment we highly recommend the team at Pro Physio and we work closely with them to aid our athletes.

Sports massage sessions may be booked at times outside the allotted hours but the majority of our time is spent in the gym training clients outside of these times so it may not always be possible to accommodate this.

About Sports Massage

Massage is recorded as one of the earliest forms of physical therapy and it is known that it was used by very different cultures over 3000 years ago. It is only in the much more recent past since travel and communications have enabled different civilisations to meet that so many forms of massage have been developed.

Aims

In all types of massage, the therapist has specific aims in mind, and in sports massage we focus on the individual needs of the athlete. With the ever growing number of people taking part in sport and fitness combined with the increasing competitiveness and intensity of physical exercise, the demand for sports massage is also increasing and becoming more and more recognised as a skill which may aid recovery and enhance performance.

Sports massage does have some aims in common with other forms of massage and it is especially important to have a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, in particular the muscular and skeletal systems. By understanding these systems and the effects of exercise, we may also appreciate how massage may benefit the athlete and becomes an integral part of their training program.

Athletes who are looking to improve performance and increase their competitive edge do so by adopting a training schedule to enhance their skill, strength, stamina, suppleness and speed. The degree to which they develop and utilise these qualities will depend on other factors such as the level of competition, the sport played, and possibly their position in a team. However, no matter which sport, the aim is nearly always to increase the level of training and thereby subject the body to gradual and controlled overuse.

It is this overuse that may often create problems and imbalances in the soft tissues. If these are ignored and allowed to become chronic, they will not only hinder the athlete's rate of improvement, but also in many cases their performance may well suffer and ultimately the athlete may be susceptible to developing more conditions that are serious. Certainly if they are unable to perform at their best, they may be more at risk from other more traumatic forms of injury. For example, a player involved in a contact sport who is "carrying" an injury may not have their usual level of agility.

Benefits

Massage, applied skillfully, is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system. Received regularly this may help athletes prevent injuries, which might otherwise be caused by overuse. A constant build up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves.

These muscle imbalances may develop and often go undiagnosed until they are serious enough to cause the athlete discomfort or impede performance. The skilled massage therapist will be able to detect variations in the soft tissues and by using the correct techniques, help the sports person maintain a much healthier physical state.

It may therefore be reasonably claimed that one of the greatest benefits of sports massage is in helping prevent injury.

Group Training

We run group training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7pm. We also have a Saturday morning class at 9am. The sessions are priced at £10 and are 'pay as you go'.

The sessions are only open to our current or past personal training clients as the movements we perform are not suitable for beginners. If you would like to organise a series of personal training sessions to learn the fundamental movements and prepare you for the group training classes this can be arranged. Alternatively, if you do not consider yourself a beginner and are interested in group training please request a free personal training session with us so we can evaluate you before you enter into a group class.

Personal Training

Personal training constitutes the majority of our work and is the entry route to our group training sessions. Each session lasts 45 minutes and focuses on advancing capacity and balance across the ten recognised physical domains (cardio-respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy). Individual goals are stated from the outset of the programme and then progressively realised over the course of your training period. All sessions are scaled to match your athletic ability and are advancements are relative to your progress. Variety is a key component of our philosophy and no session will ever be the same. Each workout is a competitive effort with yourself and the cohort. We find that by treating fitness like sport we advance our athletes physical capacity dramatically faster than a session with no goal or purpose.

We also offer semi-private training. If you would like to train with up to 3 friends, we can arrange this. The content of these sessions will be more replicate of a class, but this makes for a great option if you wish to save money and split the cost of training.

All personal training programmes are supplemented with nutritional guidance and are preceded by a free, no obligation training session/consultation. Prices are available upon request.

The 12 Week Programme

Overview

Introducing the Rebel Fitness 12 Week Programme. This is NOT a programme designed to make you look like a bodybuilder or a supermodel, but rather like a professional athlete and a generally fit and healthy individual. This programme will hone your ability across all domains of fitness, introduce you to new and exciting training techniques, increase your confidence and promises to produce real results.

The 12 week programme is not for the faint of heart. Forget your isolation exercises such as bicep curls and tricep extensions. We focus fundamental movements such as squats, deadlifts, cleans, press and more. Not only are these exercises far more difficult to perform than typical "beach weights" exercises, but they are vastly more effective and will increase your speed, strength, flexibilty and power to levels you previously thought unreachable. In addition to this, high intensity circuit training is a major part of the programme, utilising equipment such as dumbbells, rope, tyres, medicine balls, kettlebells and barbells.

Programme Structure

The programme consists of:

* 48 personal training sessions.
* 6 sports massage treatments.
* 3 nutrition consultations.

The programme is split into three phases:

Phase 1 - Weeks 1-4 lay the foundations for the programme. We train 3 times per week and focus on technique and ensuring good movement patterns before adding more complex exercises and increasing intensity.

Phase 2 - Weeks 4-8 is where we start really start to step things up. As well as increasing the training frequency to 4 times per week, the sessions become more demanding and we bring in new training stimuli.

Phase 3 - Weeks 8-12 put the icing on the cake. During phase 3 we typically introduce advance training methods such as Olympic lifting. During this period we train 5 times per week which we have found makes a significant difference in terms of results.

Sports massage therapy and nutrition sessions can be booked as and when throughout the course of the programme.

(Please note: the above structure is a guideline however the rate of improvement can and will vary between individuals.)

What To Expect

This is and has been our most popular training programme as the results are remarkable. Previous participants have lost between 12 and 20 kg over the course of the 12 week programme and profoundly improved their fitness. It is important to realise that this demands effort and dedication. This is a transformation programme and is a serious undertaking.

For more information please contact us, declaring your interest in the 12 week programme.
